6 Questions We Ask Before Starting Your Custom Millwork Project

When a homeowner reaches out to us about custom millwork, we know it’s the start of something special. Whether you’re dreaming of built-in bookshelves, a new mantle, entryway storage or custom cabinetry, we want to understand exactly what you’re envisioning (and see if we’re the right fit for your project).
While each project we work on is one-of-a-kind, every conversation starts with the same important questions to cover the bases. These questions help us get you pricing promptly, plan your project smoothly — and make sure the end result is exactly what you had in mind.
Here’s what we’ll ask (and why):
1. Do you have a timeline in mind?
Are you hoping to have your new built-ins ready before the holidays? Or planning a larger home renovation in the months ahead? Knowing your ideal timeline helps us determine availability and coordinate design, fabrication and installation.

2. What is your budget?
Custom woodwork can be tailored to fit a wide range of budgets, depending on the materials, finishes, and level of detail you’re after. Sharing your budget early helps us identify and provide alternative options where necessary, to balance craftsmanship and aesthetics with cost.
3. What finishes do you have in mind?
A finish can completely change the look and feel of your project. Do you love the warmth of natural oak grain, or prefer a sleek, painted finish? We can talk through samples, colors, and styles to make sure your millwork fits seamlessly into your home’s design.

4. Where are you located?
We typically serve homeowners within a one hour drive of our woodshop. This generally includes towns along the Southern Maine coastline from Scarborough to Harpswell, and from the coast line inland as far west as Bridgton. Knowing where you’re located helps us determine if the project is feasible for us to take on, and also account for deliveries and installation to ensure we can provide you with accurate timelines and costs.

5. When can we come take a look at the space?
Seeing your space in person makes all the difference. During a site visit, we’ll take measurements, note architectural details, and discuss how the new piece will integrate with your home’s layout and lighting. This step ensures the finished result looks like it’s always belonged there.
6. How did you hear about us?
Many of our favorite projects come from word-of-mouth — whether that’s a neighbor’s recommendation, your interior designer, or a photo you saw on social media. We love hearing how people find us; it helps us connect with more homeowners who value high-end, thoughtfully designed custom craftsmanship.

Bonus: Do you have any inspiration photos?
Pinterest boards, magazine clippings, screenshots, AI renderings — if you’ve got ‘em, we want to see ‘em! Sharing reference photos helps us understand your taste and gives us a visual starting point for design. Even if you just know the feel you’re going for, that’s great too.
